the boat lullabies

I found this cool post on The Boat Lullabies, it made me think about how different photography is now that everyone uses digital. It’s too easy to delete a photo you don’t like, and in retrospect, sometimes those are the ones that are the most interesting.

jimmy williams: now see hear!

I am a huge fan of photojournalist style photography, I think it’s a genre that really separates the pro’s from the… not so pro. It’s extremely difficult to shoot because you both have to engage people and make them like you, while blending into the background and not being too distracting so you can capture the candid moments.

I came across this photographer Jimmy Williams and I was excited because I’m always pleased to find a new photojournalist that I wasn’t aware of before. He has a series called Music Makers and it’s a photo documentation of “Southern Musical Masters”. Very cool, check out some of my favorites below, as well as an audio-visual explanation of the series where you can hear some of the songs by the musicians.

master photographers

I love contemporary work, but I’ve also spent a lot of time looking back on the masters of photography. There’s a reason these photos are still around and people are still talking about them today. I found this site showcasing some of the Master Photographers of the past from Photography Now. It’s an amazing collection, nicely designed, and has so many famous and iconic images from all 38 different photographers, my favorites from photo-history class included. It’s impossible to pick favorites, you must see it!

its nice that zine: if drawings were photographs

Found this via My Love For You Is A Stampede Of Horses. It’s a zine from It’s Nice That, called If Drawings Were Photographs. Apparently the idea behind the zine is “Tom gave drawings to Rob and Rob tried to make them into photographs.” I think it’s hilarious, the photos and the drawings are both great. Check out the link to purchase the zine, and see some samples from it below:

legs?

I have no idea what this photo series is for, because I found it on a non-english site. All I can tell is that it MAY be for a magazine called “For Him”. I liked it because the colors were vibrant, it was a bit strange, and of course, look at all the long model-y legs. Check out my favorites below:

upside downy face

I saw this awhile back but I just stumbled upon it again. Upside Downy Face is a photo series by photography studio Bruton Stroube. It’s pretty funny, and mildly unnatractive. Check out the site for the whole series plus extras, and below for some of my faves:

PS: If you ever thought about watermarking your images online, this is a much classier and more effective way of getting the same point across. Just sayin’.

and the villain still pursues her

I was going to wait until tomorrow to post this, but it’s too good. This is a photo series called And The Villain Still Pursues Her (from 160 Grams) and the photographers behind this are Pamela Reed and Matthew Rader. I love how the images are animated, what a great idea! If more fashion editorial series were this creative, I’d be much more interested in commercial photography. You’re going to have to go to the site to see the animated versions since they’re too big and Wordpress resizes them for me and I didn’t install Image Ready so I can’t resize them myself etc… just go check them out, it’s worth it!

susanne junker

I just came across this amazing photographer Susanne Junker and I absolutely loved this series she did called Figures For The Base Of A Crucifixion. Believe it or not they’re all the same women in each portrait, and they are all self-portraits. You have to go to her site and check out the full series, but below are some of my favorites:

before i die i want to…

Just saw this on Photojojo, so I wanted to repost if you don’t subscribe (why don’t you subscribe, it’s so good!) The project is called Before I Die I Want To… and basically people send in polaroid photos of themselves and finish the sentence underneath. The about page on the site has a very interesting explanation for the project, I highly suggest you read it before looking through the photos. I’ve posted some of my favorites below, but check out the site, there are so many to look through.

Some of the responses are funny, some are really touching, some are ambitious and some are… well, very attainable. My least favorite response? Before I die I want to live. My most favorite response? Before I die I want to have a traveling family band. Me too! Call me!

noah kalina

Browsing through flickr I came across photographer Noah Kalina, and I really liked his work. I especially liked the Lost and Found series on his website. I don’t know what it is about portraits where people’s faces are obscured or anonymous, but I find it fascinating. I’ve even done a few sets like this myself. Check out some of my favorites below:
