graphic intersections: submission

Came across this cool project called Graphic Intersections from The Exposure Project, here’s the explanation from the website:

Graphic Intersections is a collaborative project loosely based on the old Surrealist and Dadaist game The Exquisite Corpse. Designed to unite disparate artists in an interconnected photographic relay of images inspired by one another, this project strives to emphasize a system of response entirely rooted in unmediated visual reaction.

The first photographer made a photograph, which was subsequently forwarded to the second in line.  The 2nd then, based solely on their own visual, emotional, intellectual or philosophical response, in turn made photographs in artistic reaction to the one they were given.  The artists involved were not given any written material to accompany the photograph, nor did they know whose image they were responding to.  This was designed to propagate chance, or as the Surrealist’s put it, exploit “the mystique of accident.”

Ultimately, Graphic Intersections to challenge the bounds of sequential, narrative imagery, while simultaneously fostering stronger lines of artistic affiliation.

Check out the previous project, and submit to the new one, there’s still time!

master photographers

I love contemporary work, but I’ve also spent a lot of time looking back on the masters of photography. There’s a reason these photos are still around and people are still talking about them today. I found this site showcasing some of the Master Photographers of the past from Photography Now. It’s an amazing collection, nicely designed, and has so many famous and iconic images from all 38 different photographers, my favorites from photo-history class included. It’s impossible to pick favorites, you must see it!

its nice that zine: if drawings were photographs

Found this via My Love For You Is A Stampede Of Horses. It’s a zine from It’s Nice That, called If Drawings Were Photographs. Apparently the idea behind the zine is “Tom gave drawings to Rob and Rob tried to make them into photographs.” I think it’s hilarious, the photos and the drawings are both great. Check out the link to purchase the zine, and see some samples from it below:

and the villain still pursues her

I was going to wait until tomorrow to post this, but it’s too good. This is a photo series called And The Villain Still Pursues Her (from 160 Grams) and the photographers behind this are Pamela Reed and Matthew Rader. I love how the images are animated, what a great idea! If more fashion editorial series were this creative, I’d be much more interested in commercial photography. You’re going to have to go to the site to see the animated versions since they’re too big and Wordpress resizes them for me and I didn’t install Image Ready so I can’t resize them myself etc… just go check them out, it’s worth it!

pictory

I’m very excited about this new online magazine, Pictory! Instead of (badly) rephrasing, I’ll just post Laura Brunow Miner’s editor letter, so you can get an idea of how cool this magazine really is:

I love photography. Few things make me happier than a beautiful image—online or in print. That said, I’ve become a little complacent about some photos. The Internet is brimming with eye candy, but the vast majority of these images have lost their original context. Photo credits are rare and captions usually garbled, so I find myself often wondering: Who made this? What does it mean? The forces of the Internet can sometimes turn good work into confusing shrapnel.

I hope to do the opposite with Pictory. I want to collect images and stories directly from their sources: the people who create them. And then I want to make the best work that much better by editing, proofing, and compiling submissions into glossy online showcases. Big images. Careful details. Practical design. Credit and context.

Maybe it’s a new model for online magazines. Or, maybe it’s just the best I can do from my living room.

Picture 5Sounds like an amazing idea. I do love sites like tumblr, weheartit, yay!everyday, and ffffound where users can curate and collect images they like. A lot of the time though the photographer’s name gets lost in the numerous reposts and I never get to find out who shot that amazing image. Pictory aims to connect images with photographers and the story behind the photograph. BIG photographs.

I’d repost some of the amazing photos in the first feature “Overseas and Overwhelmed” but that somehow seems to defeat the purpose. Go check it out for yourself!

(I should add, the design of the site is also pretty awesome.)

exteens

I found a very cool photo-book being released by Blood of the Young Zine, called Exteens. It’s a collaboration between between David Geeting, T. Reilly Hodgson, Dimitri Karakostas, and Hannah Myall, a hand assembled edition of 40 – 36 4″x6″ photographs with 4 11″x15″ B&W posters and a nameplate.

It’s their second release, and it’s a limited edition, so get it now while you can!

poor but sexy

I found this cool new(ish) mag today called Poor But Sexy which is Canadian and specifically from the Toronto area. Here’s the description from the website, why paraphrase amiright?

Developed by Seed9 Photography and Design, Poor But Sexy, the publication, was created to provide a fresh avenue to publish artists, who will provoke, startle, titillate, and engage us each issue.

Poor But Sexy is a compilation of like-minded artists and marketers showcasing their work through project-based spreads, profiles, stories, and interviews.

Although our focus is on submissions from the Toronto area, artists worldwide will be added to the mix. Poor But Sexy is not only a showcase for new works by established artists that we know and love, it is a portal for up-and-coming talent who are just stepping into the business of art.

I’m super interested to check out Volume I which has some cool photography that I’m getting into (especially the photos of the trailer couple):

1000 words photography

I found this really cool online mag called 1000 Words Photography. The current issue, Portraits, features some amazing photographers that I already know and love, as well as a couple I haven’t heard of before. I like how as you browse through the artist’s work, there are descriptions, artist statements, and information in between each photo. It feels like being at a gallery, plus I love being able to read more about a series and what the artist is trying to communicate.

Here are some of my favorites from the Portraits issue, but seriously, check out the rest because there is a lot of great work there:
